DERSec at DistribuTECH 2025: Securing the Grid Edge

Meeting the Industry at DistribuTECH

DERSec was proud to exhibit at DistribuTECH 2025 in Orlando, one of the utility industry’s premier events for grid modernization and distributed energy. The conference brought together over 12,000 utility professionals, technology providers, and regulators to discuss the future of the grid.

Our team demonstrated DERSec Sentry’s real-time cyber-physical verification capabilities, showing how our platform detects operationally dangerous commands that traditional network monitoring tools miss entirely.

Key Themes from the Conference

DER Cybersecurity Is Now a Board-Level Concern

Multiple utility CISOs and CIOs we spoke with confirmed that DER security has moved from a technical concern to an executive priority. The convergence of increased DER penetration, evolving threat landscape, and regulatory pressure is driving investment in purpose-built OT security solutions.

IEEE 2030.5 Adoption Is Accelerating

With California Rule 21 mandating IEEE 2030.5 for all new DER installations, the protocol is quickly becoming the de facto standard nationwide. Our demonstrations of DERSync’s protocol translation and secure aggregation capabilities generated significant interest from utilities preparing for the transition.

AI Data Centers Are Reshaping Grid Planning

Nearly every utility represented at the conference is dealing with unprecedented load growth from AI data centers. The security implications of on-site DER generation at these facilities were a frequent topic of conversation at our booth.

The conversations at DistribuTECH confirmed what we’ve been seeing in the market: utilities recognize that DER security requires specialized tools that understand both cyber and physical domains. Network monitoring alone is not sufficient.
